6 Things You’ll Never See Me Do as a Bridal Makeup Artist

Across my blog posts and social medias, I frequently talk about the things I do to go above and beyond for my brides. I rarely talk about what I don’t do, so today’s blog post is all about that! Here are 6 things you’ll never see me do as a bridal makeup artist. Some of these are a bit controversial, so I’d love to hear your thoughts!

  1. Convincing you to choose a makeup look that doesn’t feel like you

My main focus as a bridal makeup artist is ensuring my brides feel comfortable in their makeup. This features not only when choosing the products that go into my kit, (lightweight makeup only!) but also during my bridal trials. One thing you will never see me do is convincing you to wear more makeup than you are comfortable with, or choosing a style that doesn’t feel authentic to you.

There is a piece of advice I hear frequently that as professional photography removes a layer of makeup, you should wear an extra layer of makeup for your wedding day to make up for it. Whilst it is true that professional photography can dull down the vibrancy of your makeup, I personally believe you are far more likely to look back at your weddings photos and notice how uncomfortable you look, compared to the lack of colour in your blush or lipstick.

If wearing lashes or a full coverage foundation doesn’t feel like you, that is okay! I am here to remind you to do whatever you want with your bridal makeup, whether that is a full glam or a no makeup-makeup. It’s your day, so do what feels like you!

2. Not allowing you to change your mind

A common misconception with bridal trials is that you aren’t allowed to change your mind following that session. Almost all of my brides tweak their makeup from their bridal trials, and truthfully I LOVE it when they do. Your bridal trial is exactly that – a trial run. Nailing every detail the first time round is quite uncommon, so if there are any changes you’d like to make, whether they are big or small, you are absolutely allowed to do so!

3. Using ChatGPT…

Now this one might be a bit controversial as I know many people love using ChatGPT but I hate it. Regardless of it’s environmental impact (save the bees!), you will never catch me using ChatGPT anywhere across the entirety of my business. I am a one woman band, meaning all interaction you have with me is entirely from me, not a robot! All social media captions, every blog post, every email – it’s all written by me. This allows me to develop a personal relationship with my brides, so come your big day, it’s like seeing an old friend!

    4. Filming or Creating Content

Time for another controversial one! We all love watching TikTok’s of makeup artists filming their bridal makeup process on wedding mornings and filming the reactions to the finished glam, but personally I would not do this on a big day. Wedding days are a very personal day in a bride’s life, filled with nerves, excitement and intimate moments with those closest to you.

Call me a grandma, but I don’t think this is a place for setting up a tripod. I know some brides love being on camera, but I would hate to add any extra anxiety to a brides wedding day. My focus on your wedding morning is to help you feel relaxed and ensuring your makeup is absolutely perfect before walking down the aisle, not for creating content for my business. I am here to do a job – any extra photos or videos I can snap once you are ready to go are a bonus, not a priority. You will never catch me making a bridal party late for the sake of some Instagram pics!

    5. Cleaning brushes between clients

Hygiene is a non-negotiable for me so you will never see me cleaning makeup brushes with cleaning sprays between clients. Each member of your bridal party will be glammed with their own set of brushes that are then washed with anti-bacterial soap and hot water. Brush cleaning sprays do remove bacteria ready for another use, but something about them makes me feel icky! Fresh, clean brushes for everyone – always!

      6. Using a “one size fits all” mindset

Bridal makeup is unique to every bride, meaning I will never walk into your trial with a set look in mind. When talking through options, each of my bridal makeups are customised to the individual so no two looks are the same. Your skin tone, eye shape, face shape, colourings and preferences all come into play and it is my job to combine all of this to create your perfect look.

I of course have my favourite techniques and products to use, for example my absolute favourite individual lashes. However, each look is even customised down to the millimetre, placement and pattern of lash to perfectly accentuate your eyes. It’s all about the little details!

I hope you enjoyed learning more about what I don’t do as a bridal makeup artist! Did any of these surprise you? Are you also a fellow hater of ChatGPT? I’d love to know what you think!
