Let’s Talk… Photo Editing

As a makeup artist, I see lots of heavily edited photos when asking my clients for their inspiration images before their session. Photoshop and photo editing is no longer only in magazines and on high-end beauty campaigns, it is all over social media… and some of it is very sneaky! It is so important to have realistic expectations from your MUA’s – makeup can be used in so many different ways, from enhancing your natural features to totally changing the structure of your face.

Remember, makeup artists are not plastic surgeons, we can only work with what you have! Here at Imogen Sandy MUA, I specialise in natural and timeless makeup, meaning you will always leave my chair still looking like yourself. My work is all about enhancing, not changing.

One of the main things that is often edited out of images these days is skin texture – something that makeup cannot cover. Think of it like putting paint on a wall; if that wall has bumps or fine lines, these features will still be visible – the wall will just be a different colour. Everyone has texture on their skin, even the skincare gurus that have a 15 step routine! For me, it’s so important to be transparent with my clients and show real images of real women.

Across my entire portfolio, I do not edit or enhance any of my images. If they have been retouched, such as my professional work with beauty photographers, I specify this within my captions. I do this to ensure my clients know exactly what to expect when booking in with me – no surprises! No blurring, no colour enhancing and no smoothing. What you see is what you get!
